Due to COVID/visitor restrictions, Kearney Regional Medical Center has had to delay all award presentations this year. However, recognizing four outstanding nurses for their compassion and exemplification of KRMC’s values could not go unrecognized any longer.
A small ceremony was held last week to surprise the Q1 & Q2 winners of the DAISY Award for outstanding Registered Nurses (RN) and the TULIP Award for outstanding Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). The ceremony included only staff members—family members attended via virtual video. All four were asked by their managers to come in on their off-shift day, and many were surprised to find out their ‘important meeting’ was really a ploy to surprise them!
This year’s winners were:
Liz Miller, RN, Progressive Care Unit – Q1 DAISY Award
“I think all the nurses did an awesome job, but Ms. Miller is one I will remember. Thank you for all you did!”
Ashana Ferguson, RN Progressive Care Unit – Q2 DAISY Award
“We looked forward to Ashana being on duty, and could count on her kindness, responsiveness, and patience, and anticipated her respectful demeanor, tasteful sense of humor, and entertaining conversations during her visits. She just always knew the right thing to say (or not say) and do and was a great reassurance during our stay. Although she was very busy, she never rushed his care, always took time to answer questions, visit with my Dad, and listen to his anecdotal stories (even some, more than once). A charismatic nurse, advocating for the best interests of my Dad, and maintaining his dignity throughout his treatment and care; Ashana is a very deserving candidate for this recognition.”
Nissa Brown, CNA Intensive Care Unit/Float – Q1 TULIP Award (nominated by a staff member)
“Nissa was so helpful. She ambulated my patients, answered my call lights, even took my phone and sent me on break! She was such a team player and made the shift go from stressful to cake walk. Please come back! You are so appreciated.”
Brittany Baxter, CNA, Progressive Care Unit – Q2 TULIP Award
“Always on time to the sounding of the call light. Always cheerful. Always helpful. Always respectful. Always patient. And constantly reminding my Dad who was apologetic to be ‘bothering her’ throughout the nights, that ‘helping him was her job.’ A job that she does extremely well and with such dignity. We looked forward to Brittany being on duty and to conversations with her during her visits to the room. I always knew that with the amount of grace that she conducted her job that she would never make my Dad feel like his calls were an inconvenience, and that she would always give him the utmost care and attention.”
Nominees for the DAISY and TULIP awards are collected via nomination letters from patients and visitors. To learn more about the DAISY and TULIP Awards, or to nominate an outstanding nurse at Kearney Regional Medical Center, please visit kearneyregional.com/nominate.
