To better protect your privacy, the government has mailed out new cards to all Medicare recipients.

The new card includes a unique, personal Medicare number (also called a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier or MBI) made up of 11 letters and numbers. This will replace your Social Security number for Medicare billing purposes.

As of December 31, 2019, old Medicare cards are no longer valid for billing.

  • Your new Medicare card should have arrived between April 2018 and April 2019.
  • Your Medicare benefits have not changed.

What should you do if you have not received your
new Medicare card?

  • Visit to check the status of your card OR
  • Call 1-800-633-4227 to speak to a representative from Medicare

Once you get your new Medicare card, destroy your old one and start using your new one immediately.
