Kenneth B. Carey, MD

Dr. Kenneth Carey grew up in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. After graduating from high school, he attended Idaho State University and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Zoology. With aspirations in mind to become an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon, his education was far from over. His pursuit led him to Oregon Health and Science University, where he excelled in surgical training. During his tenure there, he was awarded the AAOMS Student Award for outstanding achievements and performance in undergraduate Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training. He later graduated with Honors and earned a degree in Doctor of Dental Medicine. While there, Dr. Carey was also awarded the Health Professions Scholarship from the United States Army and was commissioned as a Captain into active duty service. He completed Officer Basic Course at Fort Sam Houston graduating as a Distinguished Honor Graduate.
Dr. Carey was subsequently transferred to Fort Bragg NC, home of the 82nd Airborne and 3rd Special Forces Group. He completed the US Army Airborne Course earning his “Wings” and the Combat Care Casualty Course. Afterward, Dr. Carey began his training as an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon at Womack Army Medical Center. He served as Chief Resident and completed his training in 2012 where he graduated and earned his certificate as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.
After graduation, he was promoted to Major and asked to serve as a Staff in the Oral and Maxillofacial training program. While there, he served in multiple leadership roles to include Program Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial training program with the primary responsibility to train residents to become surgeons. He also served as Chief of Service, Officer in Charge (OIC), and Department Chair. He also served on and headed the committee formed by the Consultant to the Surgeon General for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to select candidates for the entire US Army to matriculate and train as Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He also served as Affiliate Faculty to the Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program at Smoke Bomb Hill DC as well as the Unit Anesthesia Officer.
While serving in all these capacities, Dr. Carey also challenged the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and successfully earned his board certification in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery achieving the status of Diplomate. Board certification is the highest level of certification one can achieve as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. He also became a Fellow in the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and American Society of Dental Anesthesiology. After many years of service, Dr. Carey decided it was time for private practice and transitioned out the military in 2017. He later moved to Kearney, Nebraska and started Heartland Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to serve the residents of Central Nebraska. Dr. Carey is a credentialed provider at Kearney Regional Medical Center.
